Philip Aroko Detained for 7 Days Over Alleged Role in MP Charles Were’s Murder Plot

Embattled politician and businessman Philip Aroko has been detained for seven days after being dramatically presented at the JKIA Law Courts, hours after a High Court order demanded his production.

Aroko, who had been missing from public view following his controversial arrest, resurfaced at 3 p.m. on May 9, following growing pressure from his legal team and public concern over his disappearance. His lawyers had accused law enforcement of holding him incommunicado.

According to the State, Aroko is now a prime suspect in the assassination of Kasipul Kabondo Member of Parliament Charles Were. Prosecutors told the court that Aroko not only issued threats to the slain MP before his death but also played a financial role in facilitating the killing.

“The respondent has been directly linked through communication records and financial trails to multiple persons of interest,” the prosecution stated, adding that meetings in Homabay, Nairobi, and Nakuru were part of the planning phase.

The court heard that the late MP had previously filed reports at the DCI regional headquarters, claiming to have received threats from Aroko. Investigators say they are still analyzing financial transactions believed to be tied to the planning and execution of the crime.

Authorities also expressed concern that several key witnesses were yet to come forward, fearing for their safety. The prosecution initially requested 30 days to continue with investigations and to secure witness protection.

However, Aroko strongly opposed the request, citing health concerns and the condition of his sick wife. “Thirty days is crazy. I have a family and I am on medication. I do not have the machinery to interfere with witnesses,” he said.

He pleaded with the court to be held at Kileleshwa Police Station instead of Kasarani, to be closer to his ailing wife. He also requested a shorter remand period of five days, vowing to fully cooperate with investigators.

Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi ruled in his favor partially, acknowledging that Aroko had voluntarily presented himself and was not a flight risk. She granted a custodial order of seven working days and ordered that he be remanded at Kileleshwa Police Station.

The case has now captured national attention, with observers calling for transparency and protection for all witnesses involved in the unfolding scandal.
