pep Guardiola Reveals Why Erling Haaland Missed Man City’s Crucial Clash Against Real Madrid

Published on

Madrid, Spain — Manchester City’s Champions League dreams came to an abrupt end following a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid, with fans left puzzled over Erling Haaland’s absence from the pitch during the high-stakes quarter-final second leg. The Norwegian striker, who had been expected to play a pivotal role, remained an unused substitute, raising questions about Pep Guardiola’s tactical choices.

Haaland, who had scored both goals in City’s narrow 3-2 first-leg loss, was noticeably missing from the starting eleven at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite hopes for a heroic comeback, City’s European campaign crumbled early, with Real Madrid sealing the tie within the first four minutes.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola explained the surprising omission. “Erling tried to train [on Tuesday] after the last action against Newcastle. With the images we have done, it was fine, but he had discomfort walking, for example up the stairs,” Guardiola revealed, according to 90min. “We spoke and he said he wasn’t ready, he didn’t feel good.”

Haaland had shown signs of struggle during City’s recent 4-0 win over Newcastle United, sparking concerns over his fitness. Despite medical checks suggesting no major issues, the lingering discomfort was enough for Guardiola to keep his star striker on the bench.

With their Champions League hopes dashed, Manchester City now turn their focus to securing a top-four finish in the Premier League and pursuing FA Cup glory. Though once favourites for both domestic and European titles this season, injuries and inconsistent form have plagued Guardiola’s side.

The turning point of City’s season came when midfield anchor Rodri suffered an ACL tear in September, derailing their momentum. The club struggled between October and late December, securing only one win during that period. Their January signings have yet to make a significant impact, leaving City trailing 17 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

“Nothing is eternal,” Guardiola remarked via Sky Sports. “We can’t deny what this group of players has achieved—six Premier League titles in seven seasons, consistent Champions League runs—but all cycles eventually come to an end.”

With their domestic dominance under threat and their European journey cut short, Manchester City faces a challenging path ahead, with Haaland’s fitness and the team’s resilience under the spotlight.
