One Dead, Several Injured in Violent Fan Clash at Gusii Stadium Ahead of Gor Mahia vs Shabana Match

A tragic incident unfolded at Gusii Stadium on Sunday, claiming one life and leaving several others injured following a violent altercation between Gor Mahia and Shabana FC supporters ahead of a highly anticipated Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League clash.

The chaos erupted just minutes before the scheduled 2 p.m. kickoff between the league’s third and fourth-placed teams, triggering a stampede that turned the stadium into a scene of panic and confusion.

According to eyewitnesses and video footage obtained by The Eastleigh Voice, the violence began in the stands and quickly spilled onto the pitch. Rival fans, engaged in heated chants, soon resorted to throwing stones and other objects at each other. The situation escalated rapidly, forcing terrified fans to scramble for exits in a desperate attempt to escape the fray.

An announcer could be heard pleading for calm over the stadium’s loudspeaker system, but his efforts were largely ignored amid the chaos.

Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after and managed to contain the situation. Emergency responders rushed the injured to nearby hospitals in Kisii County for urgent medical attention. Sadly, one individual succumbed to injuries sustained during the melee.

Despite the unsettling events, the match between Gor Mahia and Shabana FC eventually went ahead after a one-hour delay. FKF officials, in coordination with local authorities, launched an investigation into the incident, vowing to take action against those responsible for instigating the violence.

Fan violence has long plagued Kenyan football, and Sunday’s tragedy adds to growing concerns about security at major sporting events. Stakeholders are now calling for stricter measures to ensure the safety of spectators and players alike.
