Omanyala, Wanyonyi Lead Kenya’s Assault at Rabat Diamond League
Kenya’s top athletics stars are poised to clash with global elites at the fourth leg of the 2025 Wanda Diamond League this Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.
Double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet aims to extend her dominance in the women’s 3000m, building on her 5000m victory in the Xiamen leg. She faces tough Ethiopian opposition, including Medina Eisa and Ejgayehu Taye, the world’s second and third-ranked athletes.
Janeth Chepngetich (PB 8:23.48) will join Chebet to bolster Kenya’s medal hopes in what promises to be an electric contest.
Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi returns to the Diamond League with his sights set on the top spot. His personal best of 1:41.11 positions him as the athlete to beat. His competition includes Doha winner Tshepiso Masalela, Kethobogile Haingura, Wycliffe Kinyamal, and rising star Aaron Cheminingwa.
Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, will reignite his rivalry in the 100m against America’s Fred Kerley and South Africa’s Akani Simbine. Omanyala, fresh off setting a new 150m record at the Atlanta City Games, returns to Rabat after placing third in 2023 with a time of 10.05.
In the women’s 1500m, Nelly Chepchirchir, with a PB of 3:56.14, will look to secure a second consecutive Diamond League win, facing stiff competition from Ethiopia’s Saron Berhe and Australia’s Sarah Billings.
Kenya’s rich talent in the men’s 1500m will be represented by Brian Komen (PB 3:28.80), Reynold Cheruiyot, Vincent Keter, Boaz Kiprugut, and Festus Lagat.
The men’s 3000m steeplechase will close the day with Morocco’s Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali battling a strong Kenyan squad. Abraham Kibiwot, Olympic bronze medalist, will lead the team alongside Edmund Serem, the younger brother to Amos Serem, who upset El Bakkali in Brussels last year.
Kenya’s presence in Rabat is set to be powerful, as the nation eyes podium finishes and critical points on the road to the Diamond League Final.
