ODM Defends Role in IEBC Reconstitution Amid Interference Claims
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly dismissed allegations of interfering in the ongoing reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The party maintains that the process is being conducted in full compliance with the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which was chaired by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
“We view the accusation by a section of Azimio leaders as an attempt to pre-emptively discredit the panel and the outcome of the entire process,” ODM stated in a press release. “The process is being carried out in strict adherence to the recommendations of the NADCO report.”
Delay Due to Wiper’s Nomination Issue
ODM clarified that delays in the process were caused by unresolved issues surrounding Wiper’s nomination to the IEBC Selection Panel. The party explained that it had supported Wiper’s nominee, Koki Muli, who has since been fully involved in the selection process, from shortlisting candidates to conducting interviews.
ODM also defended the candidacy of Musyoka’s advisor, who is among those shortlisted for the IEBC Commission, stating that every Kenyan has a constitutional right to apply for the position.
Call for Selection Panel’s Independence
The party reiterated that the IEBC Selection Panel operates with full autonomy under the law and should be allowed to carry out its mandate without external influence. “The panel should be allowed to independently execute its mandate,” ODM asserted, warning against attempts to derail or delay the process.
Furthermore, ODM urged political leaders and the public to respect the selection process, emphasizing that Kenyans have waited long enough for a properly constituted electoral commission and should not face further delays.
ODM’s Internal Appointments
Amid the IEBC debate, ODM’s Central Committee endorsed Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Mohamed as the new National Organising Secretary. He replaces Abdisalan Ahmed, who resigned following his nomination as Principal Secretary by President William Ruto.
Kalonzo and Allies Demand Transparency
On April 1, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, alongside politicians including Eugene Wamalwa, raised concerns about the recruitment process for the IEBC chairperson and commissioners. They called for greater transparency, urging the selection panel to clarify how certain shortlisted candidates were chosen, particularly those with perceived political affiliations.
“We are informing Raila and Ruto that we will not accept the appointment of the IEBC chairperson, and we are prepared to take the matter to court. Our lawyers are on standby,” Wamalwa warned.
As tensions rise over the IEBC reconstitution, stakeholders await further developments that could determine the future of Kenya’s electoral management body.
