NPS Appeals for Public Help in Thika Police Officer Murder Probe
The National Police Service (NPS) is calling on members of the public to come forward with any information that may aid in investigations into the brutal murder of a police officer in Thika.
Police Constable Benard Ithai, attached to the Special Police Intercept and Verification (SPI) unit, was fatally shot on Wednesday during a routine patrol in the Cravers area of Thika town. According to eyewitness accounts, Ithai and three colleagues had stopped a boda boda rider whose motorcycle lacked the official registration code mandated for operators in the town.
An argument reportedly broke out between the officer and the rider during the inspection. The situation quickly escalated when the cyclist drew a firearm and shot the officer at close range. The suspect fled as the other officers initially scattered before returning to the scene. Despite efforts to rush Ithai to Thika Nursing Home, he succumbed to his injuries en route.
In a statement issued Thursday evening, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the NPS is actively pursuing leads in the case. “Police officers responded immediately and, working in collaboration with members of the public, launched an investigation. Currently, officers are pursuing critical leads to apprehend the assailant,” Nyaga stated.
The NPS has now appealed to anyone with information that may help in identifying or locating the shooter to report to the nearest police station or use the service’s toll-free contact numbers.
“We commend members of the public who have already shared vital tips and urge more Kenyans to support this investigation. The safety and security of all residents and visitors remains our top priority,” Nyaga added.
The police service also expressed condolences to the family of the late officer and reassured them that every effort is being made to ensure justice is served.
The incident has reignited public concerns over rising insecurity and the risks faced by officers on the frontlines of law enforcement. Investigations remain ongoing.
