Nine Family Members Killed in Siaya Arson Attack to Be Buried in Mass Grave

Grief hangs heavy over Sigomere village in Ugunja, Siaya County, as nine members of the same family who perished in a suspected arson attack are set to be buried today in a mass grave at their home in Upanda village.

The victims—a man, his wife, and their seven children—were burnt alive in their sleep after their house was deliberately set ablaze by unknown attackers on the night of April 23, 2025. The chilling incident has shocked the nation and devastated the small rural community.

Authorities have since arrested the main suspect, Christopher Okello Owino, 56, who was captured on April 24 in the Kianda area of Kibra, Nairobi, just a day after the deadly attack. Detectives say Owino had gone into hiding and was attempting to evade arrest after learning that he was being pursued.

According to police, a tip-off from residents in Kibra—who grew suspicious after Owino admitted to traveling to his rural home on the night of the attack—led to his arrest. He was later transferred back to Ugunja for further questioning and prosecution.

In a dramatic twist, Owino’s wife was also arrested in Sigomere, Migori County, after investigators recovered a can of oil believed to have been used to ignite the fire. Forensic teams are analyzing the suspect’s phones in a bid to identify possible accomplices in what authorities now believe may have been a premeditated attack.

Sources close to the investigation allege that Owino may have hired a group of individuals to accompany him to Upanda village in the early morning hours to carry out the crime before fleeing back to Nairobi.

The motive behind the horrific act remains unclear, though detectives are investigating family disputes and land ownership issues as potential leads.

As villagers gather today to bid farewell to the nine lives lost, calls for justice grow louder.

“This is the darkest day our community has ever faced,” said one village elder. “An entire family wiped out in one night—this cannot go unanswered.”

The burial is expected to draw hundreds of mourners and government officials, with security heightened in the area.

The tragic case has renewed debate around rising domestic violence, unresolved family feuds, and the need for mental health and conflict mediation support in rural communities across Kenya.
