Narok Leaders Oppose Airport Project Tied to Former President Uhuru Kenyatta

A section of leaders from Narok County have voiced strong opposition to a proposed international airport project set to be launched by President William Ruto later this month. The dispute centers around the location of the proposed airport, which is allegedly on land linked to former President Uhuru Kenyatta near the Maasai Mara.

Speaking in Siana Ward, Narok West Constituency, the leaders insisted that such a major infrastructure project should be constructed on public land, not private property. They argue that building the airport on public land would ensure more direct benefits for the local communities, especially in terms of employment and economic development.

“We are saying, as Narok leaders, we will not allow an international airport to be built on land belonging to an individual. We want it to be built here in Narok so that our youth can get jobs,” said Emurua Dikir MP Johana Ng’eno.

Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu urged his fellow leaders to set aside political differences during the President’s visit and focus on lobbying for more development initiatives in the region.

“We want, when the President visits, for leaders to put politics aside and allow the President to bring development. The time for politics will come. We have said President Ruto is ten years without a break because we can see the work he is doing here in Narok,” Governor Ntutu stated.

Despite the governor’s call for unity and focus on development, the airport proposal has become a contentious issue, especially with the involvement of land allegedly owned by a high-profile figure like Uhuru Kenyatta. Local leaders insist that development must prioritize public interest and transparency.

The proposed international airport is seen as a strategic investment aimed at boosting tourism in the Maasai Mara and the broader region. However, the debate over land ownership and equitable benefit distribution may delay or derail the project unless consensus is reached.

As President Ruto’s development tour draws near, all eyes will be on Narok to see how the national government addresses the concerns of local leaders and residents about the controversial airport plan.
