Nakuru Tragedy: Boda Boda Rider Poisons Sons, Attempts Suicide in Shocking Incident
A heart-wrenching tragedy has rocked Nakuru County after a boda boda rider allegedly poisoned his two sons and attempted to take his own life. The man, now under tight police surveillance, is receiving treatment at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The horrific incident occurred on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, while the children’s mother was away at work. The two boys, aged 7 and 12, were left in their father’s care while their mother, a food vendor, made her usual delivery rounds.
According to the mother, she noticed her husband’s motorcycle parked outside their home while making deliveries and assumed all was well. She later called him to ask what he and the children would like for lunch, unaware of the unfolding nightmare.
Moments later, two of her other children ran to her workplace, telling her that the boys were in severe distress and couldn’t move.
“I asked them where their father was and they told me he had gone to pick a client,” she said in an emotional interview. “I asked my colleague to hold things at the stall and rushed home.”
Upon arrival, she found the boys in agony, suffering from what appeared to be severe food poisoning. Neighbors helped rush the children to the hospital, but tragically, both died while receiving treatment.
Later, it was discovered that their father had also been admitted to the same hospital after reportedly ingesting poison in a suicide attempt. Police are waiting for him to stabilize before questioning him.
Motive Still Unknown
The motive for the incident remains unclear. The police have launched an investigation and are considering charging the suspect with the murder of his two sons.
Their bodies have been moved to the Nakuru Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem is scheduled.
Rising Mental Health Concerns
This incident adds to a growing list of domestic tragedies pointing to deeper mental health issues within the country. Mental health professionals have consistently called for more accessible support systems for families and individuals under emotional and financial stress.
Authorities urge anyone experiencing signs of mental distress to seek help from health professionals or contact available crisis support lines.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to a mental health professional or contact a suicide prevention hotline. You are not alone.
