Nakuru Outrage: Businessman Gunned Down in Front of Wife Despite Complying with Robbers
Nakuru, Kenya – Tension is high in Nakuru’s Pipeline estate following the brutal murder of a local businessman who was shot dead by armed robbers in front of his wife, despite offering no resistance.
The slain man, Jackson Mwangi Macharia, was ambushed on the evening of Wednesday, May 21, at around 8 PM while closing his small roadside business located at the front of his compound. Eyewitnesses say two assailants, one wielding a firearm and the other a machete, ordered the couple to surrender their earnings. Despite complying, Macharia was shot in the back, killing him on the spot. His wife sustained a gunshot wound to her arm.
“He turned to hand them the money, and they still shot him. It’s heartbreaking,” said Lilian Chebai, a resident of the nearby Joyland estate.
The incident triggered a wave of protests from outraged residents, who took to the streets blaming rampant insecurity and accusing both the police and local leaders of negligence. Many pointed to the overgrown bushes along the estate’s access roads as havens for criminals.
“This is not the first time this is happening. We’ve complained and nothing is ever done. How long will we bury our people before something is done?” shouted one protester.
Police responded to the scene and assured residents of a thorough investigation and increased patrols in the area. However, the assurance did little to calm the growing tension as locals demanded immediate arrests and sustainable safety measures.
Security agencies in Nakuru have come under heavy criticism in recent months over a reported spike in violent crimes in residential areas, particularly in Pipeline and surrounding estates.
As investigations commence, residents are left shaken and fearful, mourning a life lost senselessly and grappling with the bitter reality of insecurity on their doorsteps.
