MP Were’s Assassination: Phone Used to Contact Bodyguard Linked to Deceased Woman

Detectives investigating the shocking assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were have made significant progress after uncovering two major leads — a mysterious phone number and the firearm used in the killing.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is now focusing on a suspicious phone call made to the MP’s bodyguard just hours before Were was shot dead along Ngong Road on April 30.

According to insiders familiar with the investigation, the call was made at 2:40 p.m. while the bodyguard was stationed at Parliament Buildings. Although brief — just over a minute — the timing and nature of the call have raised serious concerns among investigators.

Further digging revealed that this was not the first time the caller reached out. A similar call had been made two days earlier to the same bodyguard. What’s more chilling is that the SIM card used was registered only three days before the murder, under the identity of a deceased woman from Nyanza. Authorities now believe the number was created specifically to contact the MP’s security aide in a premeditated effort.

This discovery has deepened suspicions of an orchestrated inside job and is fueling the ongoing investigation into how the murder was planned and executed.

Gun Used in Killing Tied to Multiple Crimes

In a separate but equally crucial breakthrough, DCI officers have recovered the murder weapon — a Sarsilmaz pistol — during a raid in Chokaa, Kayole. The raid also yielded a second firearm, a pair of shoes, and a bag believed to be linked to the suspects.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that ballistic tests conclusively matched the Sarsilmaz pistol to the bullets that killed the MP.

“The ballistic report shows without doubt that this weapon was used to take the life of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were. It has also been linked to a string of other violent crimes,” said IG Kanja.

Forensic analysis has connected the same pistol to three robberies in Kayole, Komarocks, and Ndumberi (Kiambu County) — suggesting it may have been circulating within a larger criminal syndicate.

Ten Suspects Arrested, Including Driver and Bodyguard

So far, authorities have arrested ten individuals, among them the MP’s personal driver and bodyguard, intensifying speculation that the killers may have had direct access to the lawmaker’s routine and movements.

IG Kanja has reassured the public that the DCI is pursuing every lead and will not rest until everyone involved — including planners, executors, and accomplices — is brought to justice.

“This was a brutal, calculated murder. We owe it to the public and the late MP’s family to uncover the full truth,” he said.

Investigators are now working to unmask the person behind the fake number and determine whether the murder was politically motivated or linked to wider criminal operations.
