The debate over National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s impartiality has intensified, with Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo revealing that an Azimio la Umoja legislator is prepared to table an impeachment motion against him. This follows a High Court ruling that Wetang’ula cannot serve as both Speaker and Ford Kenya party leader, raising concerns over a conflict of interest.

Odhiambo emphasized that Wetang’ula’s dual roles create contradictions within Parliament, adding, “He can be impeached. Either let go of Ford Kenya leadership or remain the Speaker.” She further highlighted that Azimio is determined to uphold the rule of law and ensure fair leadership within the legislative house.
Meanwhile, Western parliamentary leaders have rallied behind Wetang’ula, dismissing criticism as a ‘sponsored media attack.’ Sirisia MP John Walukhe and Teso South MP Mary Emase accused unnamed detractors of character assassination. Emase stated, “We shall not allow anyone to downgrade the Speaker’s status,” while emphasizing Wetang’ula’s contributions to the region’s political stability.
Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi insisted that Wetang’ula enjoys bipartisan support and warned that Western leaders would not be silenced. “The Speaker is going nowhere,” she asserted, stressing the need for unity within the community.
The controversy stems from Wetang’ula’s ruling that Kenya Kwanza Alliance remains the majority coalition, a decision overturned by the High Court. Minority Leader Junet Mohamed accused Wetang’ula of manipulating numbers by placing 14 defected MPs in political limbo. “This deliberate manipulation ensures Kenya Kwanza’s majority. His contradictions are alarming,” Junet criticized.
Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo echoed this, arguing that legal frameworks must guide political agreements, adding that Parliament must respect the judiciary’s decisions. Legal expert Bobby Mkangi noted that while the law is clear on dual offices, the impeachment process is complex and requires substantial support from MPs across the political divide.
With both sides firmly entrenched, Wetang’ula’s future hangs in the balance as Parliament braces for a potential impeachment showdown. Analysts believe that the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the Speaker’s fate, as political maneuvering intensifies.
