Moon Sighted in Saudi Arabia, Ramadan Begins on Saturday
Saudi Arabia has officially announced that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, following the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon. The confirmation was made on Friday evening by the Saudi Royal Court, marking the start of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims worldwide.
Global Announcements
Several other countries, including Qatar and Oman, have also confirmed that Ramadan will commence on Saturday. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, who is the President of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, had yet to make an official announcement regarding the moon sighting at the time of this report.
Significance of Ramadan
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is one of the most sacred periods in Islam. It is observed by millions of Muslims around the world as a time of fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayers, charity, and self-reflection. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is considered obligatory for all healthy adult Muslims. However, exemptions are given to young children, the elderly, sick individuals, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating.
Changes in Daily Life During Ramadan
As is customary, daily routines will shift during Ramadan. Many Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, implement shorter working hours for both private and public employees, while schools also adjust their schedules to accommodate fasting students and teachers.
Mosques worldwide will hold special nightly prayers known as Taraweeh, with the first session expected to take place after Esha prayer at Masjid Bin Bāz in Saudi Arabia on Friday night.
The Crescent Moon Tradition
For centuries, Muslims have relied on the sighting of the crescent moon to determine the beginning and end of Ramadan, as well as the two major Islamic holidays—Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The announcement of Ramadan’s start is always met with a sense of spiritual anticipation and communal preparation.
As millions embark on this sacred journey of faith, reflection, and devotion, Nairobian will continue to provide updates on Ramadan-related events and observances across the world.
