Moi University Issues Redundancy Notice Amid Financial Crisis
Moi University has issued a notice of redundancy to its employees and their respective unions, citing severe financial constraints as the reason behind the move. The announcement, made by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut, confirms that the redundancy will affect several employees who are members of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), as stipulated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the university and the union.
Declining Student Numbers to Blame
According to the notice, the university’s financial struggles stem from a significant reduction in student enrollment, leading to a decline in revenue. This has created an unsustainable operating environment, making it difficult for Moi University to meet its financial obligations, including the payment of employee salaries and benefits.
“As a result, we are compelled to review our operations and adjust the workforce accordingly so as to ensure sustainability of the University,” the notice stated.
Consultations with Affected Employees
The university management has assured employees that during the notice period, it will engage in consultations with affected staff and their union representatives, in compliance with the law and the CBA terms. The discussions aim to ensure a fair process and explore possible alternatives where applicable.
Employee Compensation
Employees affected by the redundancy will be entitled to various financial benefits, including:
- Severance pay
- Salary in lieu of notice
- Payment of accrued leave days
- Any other unpaid benefits due to them
Concerns Over Job Losses in the Education Sector
The redundancy at Moi University adds to growing concerns over job losses in Kenya’s higher education sector. Several public universities have been struggling with financial difficulties due to reduced government funding, declining student enrollment, and increasing operational costs.
With the move sparking discussions within academic circles, many are calling for urgent reforms in university funding models to ensure long-term sustainability and job security for university staff. Meanwhile, Moi University staff await further engagement with the administration to determine their fate in the ongoing restructuring process.
