Migaa Tragedy: 13 Dead as Truck Rams into PSV Matatu Near Salgaa
At least 13 people lost their lives in a horrific road accident at Migaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway in the early hours of Friday, March 14.
How Did the Accident Happen?
According to preliminary reports, the crash occurred at around 2 AM when a lorry transporting coffee towards Eldoret lost control due to brake failure. The out-of-control truck then rammed into a 14-seater PSV matatu from Kitale, which was en route to Nairobi.
Authorities confirmed that all 12 passengers in the matatu, along with the driver of the lorry, perished in the crash. Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga revealed that the victims included nine men, four women, and one child.
A Deadly Black Spot
The Migaa-Salgaa section of the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway has long been recognized as a notorious accident-prone zone. Police have continuously warned motorists to exercise caution when approaching the area.
“That area is a known black spot, and we urge motorists to be cautious when driving through,” Nyaga emphasized.
Response from Authorities and Humanitarian Groups
Emergency responders, including Kenya Red Cross teams, arrived at the scene to assist with rescue and recovery efforts. In an official statement, the organization confirmed that they have established tracing and psychosocial support services at the Molo Sub-County Hospital Funeral Home to aid affected families.
“Following the tragic road traffic incident at Migaa around 2 AM, our teams assisted in recovery efforts and provided Psychological First Aid. We have set up a tracing desk and a psychosocial support (PSS) desk at Molo Sub-County Hospital Funeral Home to help families cope with the loss and trauma. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” Kenya Red Cross stated.
Growing Concern Over Road Safety
This latest accident adds to the growing concerns over road safety along Kenya’s highways, particularly in black spots notorious for fatal crashes. Authorities continue to urge drivers to maintain strict adherence to road safety measures to prevent further loss of lives.
