Matiang’i Vows to Restore Public Trust If Elected President in 2027
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has promised to restore public trust in government if elected president in the 2027 general elections, criticizing President William Ruto’s administration for betraying the confidence of ordinary Kenyans.
Speaking at a high-profile political gathering hosted by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County, Matiang’i declared that the current leadership was “playing” with the people and fostering division instead of addressing pressing national challenges.
“I pledge to streamline and clean up this country,” Matiang’i said, drawing applause from the crowd. “Kenyans deserve a government they can trust—a government official should not have to convince you they’re telling the truth. You should just believe it because of their integrity.”
Matiang’i cited his tenure as Education CS under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, during which he claims to have eradicated national examination malpractice, as proof of his work ethic and no-nonsense approach to leadership.
“I used to inspect schools from dawn and still open exam containers in another county at 4 a.m. the next day. That’s the kind of dedication I bring to the table,” he said.
He also criticized the current administration for fostering political distractions that prevent Kenyans from uniting and demanding real solutions. “Some people in power want to divide you so you stop asking the hard questions,” he warned.
Matiang’i is positioning himself as part of a growing opposition alliance that includes Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, NARC-Kenya’s Martha Karua, and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa. The coalition is expected to front a single candidate in the 2027 race to challenge President Ruto’s bid for a second term.
The seasoned public servant has already begun touring the Gusii region, rallying support and framing his campaign around restoring dignity, integrity, and trust in public service.
As the 2027 political landscape begins to take shape, all eyes are on whether this opposition alliance can hold and whether Matiang’i can transform his bureaucratic reputation into nationwide electoral appeal.
