KU, JKUAT Announce Class Resumption Dates After 49-Day Lecturers’ Strike Ends

Students at Kenyatta University (KU) and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) are set to return to class on Monday, November 10, following the end of a seven-week nationwide lecturers’ strike.

At Kenyatta University, Academic Registrar Bernard Kivunge confirmed that all academic activities for the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year will resume immediately.

“Following the calling off of the industrial action by members of staff in the University on 6th November 2025, all activities for the First Semester are expected to resume immediately,”
Bernard Kivunge, KU Academic Registrar.

He urged students to report to campus on time to avoid missing scheduled classes.

At JKUAT, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Prof. Robert Kinyua issued a notice instructing all students to report back on Friday, November 7, ahead of the official reopening on Monday, November 10.

“Following the calling off of the industrial action by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), all students are hereby requested to report back to the University on Friday, 7th November 2025. Classes will resume on Monday, 10th November 2025,”
Prof. Robert Kinyua, JKUAT DVC Academic Affairs.

Return-to-Work Deal Ends Seven-Week Standoff

The universities’ announcements come a day after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) signed a Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF), formally ending the 49-day strike that had paralyzed learning across all public universities.

On November 5, UASU called off the strike after the government committed to settle salary arrears owed under the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“It is upon the government to honour what we have signed here today. If you do, I want to commit that there shall be no strike called by UASU up to 2030,”
Dr. Constantine Wasonga, UASU Secretary General.

The agreement also guarantees protection from victimisation, reinstatement of all staff, and full payment of withheld salaries and benefits.

“All disciplinary or intended disciplinary actions, including show-cause letters, suspensions, or dismissals, are hereby withdrawn and revoked with immediate effect,”
