KNEC Issues New Guidelines for KPSEA and KJSEA 2025 Examinations

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has introduced new examination guidelines for the 2025 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), marking a significant departure from previous assessment methods.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 24, KNEC announced that candidates will now be required to shade their answers in circles—replacing the previous system that involved drawing lines to indicate responses.

“The Council posted KJSEA sample papers on the KNEC portal in January 2025 for schools to download and familiarize their learners with the new formats,” the statement read.

Schools can now access sample papers, Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets, and detailed instructions for both KPSEA and KJSEA exams via the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.

Steps to Access Sample Papers, Cover Pages, and OMR Sheets

  1. Access the CBA Portal
    Visit: https://cba.knec.ac.ke
  2. Log In
Use your Assessment Centre credentials (Username and Password).
  3. For KJSEA Sample Papers:
    • Open the Grade 9 Portal.
    • Click on the “Instructions & Sample Papers” button.
    • Download the desired sample paper by clicking the “Download” button next to it.
  4. For KJSEA Sample Cover Pages and KPSEA OMR Sheets:
    • Open either the Grade 9 (KJSEA) or Grade 6 (KPSEA) portal.
    • Click on the “Download Sample Cover Page and OMR” button.
    • Available sample cover pages include:
      • 601 – English Language
      • 602 – Kiswahili Lugha
      • 606 – Kenya Sign Language (KSL)
    • Click “Download” next to the required document.
  5. Log Out
Always remember to log out of your session.

KNEC also reminded schools and teachers to keep their login credentials confidential to avoid unauthorized access to sensitive examination data.

The transition to OMR-based assessment aligns with KNEC’s broader efforts to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and integrity of national examinations in Kenya under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
