Kisii Tragedy: 6-Year-Old Boy Dies After Sleepwalking Into Family Borehole

A tragic incident has rocked the quiet village of Nyaribari Masaba Ward in Kisii County, where a six-year-old boy died after reportedly sleepwalking into an open borehole during the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to the child’s heartbroken parents, the young boy had a known history of sleepwalking—often waking up in the middle of the night, unlocking doors, and wandering outside the house. To manage the risk, the family had made it a habit to lock all doors at night using a padlock. However, on the night of the incident, the padlock was missing, a detail that now haunts the grieving family.

“We were awoken around 2 a.m. by faint cries coming from outside,” said Dismas Bosire, the boy’s father, in an interview with Kisii TV. “Upon rushing out, we heard our son’s voice coming from the borehole.”

In a desperate attempt to save the child, the family screamed for help, alerting neighbors who quickly gathered and joined in the rescue efforts. Despite the frantic operation, the boy was retrieved unresponsive and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The boy’s body was moved to the local mortuary as the devastated family and surrounding community mourned the heartbreaking loss.

Borehole Safety Now Under Scrutiny

Following the incident, questions have arisen about the safety conditions around boreholes in the region. Local authorities are expected to launch an investigation into whether the borehole was adequately covered or fenced off, and to explore preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Residents and local leaders have called on families to enhance safety around home water sources and for county governments to enforce guidelines on borehole construction and maintenance.

As Kisii County mourns this devastating loss, many are also reflecting on the importance of mental health awareness and safety precautions in homes where children suffer from conditions like sleepwalking.
