Kirinyaga: Over 100 Worshippers Hospitalized After Suspected Meat Poisoning
Panic has gripped Kanyekiine Ward in Kirinyaga County after more than 100 worshippers of the ACK Mukandu-ini Church were hospitalized following a suspected case of meat poisoning. The incident has sparked health concerns and investigations by local authorities.
The congregants had gathered for a celebration on Sunday, during which a bull was slaughtered and its meat shared among the faithful. According to county public health officials, over 100 people were admitted to both government and private hospitals in Kagio and Kerugoya, exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning.
Jefithah Mutemi, a victim currently receiving treatment at Kiaga Health Centre, described the events leading to the illness. “We slaughtered the bull on Sunday, and by Monday, several people were already seeking medical help. I brought my wife and two grandchildren here as we were not feeling well,” he said.
Saran Njiraini, another affected worshipper, reported suffering from a severe headache and joint pain, while her children experienced diarrhea. She confirmed that her family members were in stable condition under medical care.
Moses Nyaga, who is also receiving treatment, expressed confusion, stating that the meat had been inspected by a local veterinary officer before consumption. “Public health officers are now advising everyone who ate the meat to go for a medical check-up,” he said.
By Tuesday evening, more than 40 worshippers had crowded into Kiaga Health Centre, with some reportedly writhing in pain. Three of the more serious cases were transported by ambulance to the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.
Suspicions have arisen that the bull may have been sick, while others believe that the maize flour used to prepare the accompanying ugali may have been contaminated with aflatoxin.
“We took the maize from the church store to the local mill. I now wonder whether the flour was affected by aflatoxin,” said Phillis Nyaga, another congregant.
Kirinyaga Deputy Public Health Officer Peter Irungu confirmed that his team is closely monitoring the situation. He urged all individuals who consumed the meat to seek immediate medical attention and assured the public that thorough investigations are underway.
