Kikuyu Woman Collapses After Viewing Husband’s Body Shot During June 25 Protests
A tragic scene unfolded at a local mortuary in Kikuyu as a young woman collapsed after viewing the body of her husband, Kevin Njau, who was fatally shot during the June 25 Gen Z protests.
Njau, only 23 years old, was returning home from work when he was struck in the head amid clashes between anti-riot police and protesters. According to reports, he was not participating in the protests but was caught in the crossfire.
Human rights activist Hussein Khalid, who was present at the mortuary, recounted the heartbreaking moment on X, formerly Twitter:
“Kevin Njau’s wife collapsed after seeing her husband’s body at the morgue. He was just 23 years old and was shot in the head while coming from work in Kikuyu.”
Njau leaves behind a grieving widow and two young children — one aged two years and another just two months old.
Witnesses at the mortuary described how the devastated widow, accompanied by two women, struggled to stay on her feet after seeing her husband’s body. As she left the viewing area, she fainted, prompting Khalid and several others to help carry her to safety.
The death of Kevin Njau has become one of the many harrowing symbols of the human toll from the June 25 protests, which were marred by violence despite being organised as a peaceful memorial for victims of past police brutality.
Civil society groups continue to call for justice, accountability, and a full investigation into all protest-related deaths, including that of Njau.
