Kenya Shines in Tokyo, Bags 7 Golds to Finish Second at World Athletics Championships

Kenya delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, securing second place on the medal table with an impressive haul of 11 medals—seven gold, two silver, and two bronze. The championships, held at the Japan National Stadium from September 13 to September 21, highlighted Kenya’s dominance in middle- and long-distance races.

Golden Triumphs
Beatrice Chebet was Kenya’s standout star, clinching two golds. She opened the campaign with victory in the women’s 10,000m, clocking 30:37.61, before doubling her tally in the women’s 5000m.

Peres Jepchirchir added another gold with a commanding win in the women’s marathon, finishing in 2:24:43. Faith Kipyegon continued her legendary career with a gold in the women’s 1500m, while Faith Cherotich set a championship record of 8:51.59 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

On the men’s side, Emmanuel Wanyonyi captured gold in the 800m with a world-class time of 1:41.86, underlining his status as a rising star. Lilian Odira capped Kenya’s golden run on the final day with a record-breaking 1:54.62 in the women’s 800m.

Silver and Bronze Medals
Kenya’s silver medals came through Faith Kipyegon in the women’s 5000m and Dorcas Ewoi in the women’s 1500m, completing a memorable Kenyan one-two finish.

The bronze medals went to Reynold Cheruiyot in the men’s 1500m and Edmund Serem in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, rounding off the nation’s remarkable medal tally.

Global Medal Standings
The United States topped the medal table with 26 medals, including 16 gold, dominating in sprints, relays, jumps, and throws. Jamaica, a traditional sprint powerhouse, managed just one gold among its 10 medals. Botswana impressed with three medals—two gold and a silver—while Canada took third spot in the gold rankings with three wins.

Other notable performances came from the Netherlands (six medals, including two gold), Spain and New Zealand (three medals each, with two gold apiece). Great Britain and Northern Ireland endured a disappointing outing, failing to win a gold for the first time since 2003.

Host nation Japan managed only two bronze medals, while Samoa celebrated its first-ever championship medal after Alex Rose won bronze in the discus. In total, 147 medals were awarded during the championships.

Kenya’s outstanding showing in Tokyo cements its reputation as a global athletics powerhouse, especially in endurance and middle-distance events.
