Kenya Met Lists Nairobi & Mombasa Among Counties to Receive Rains for Next 5 Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall in several parts of the country over the next five days, lasting until Tuesday next week.

In its official five-day weather outlook released on Friday, May 30, Kenya Met predicted moderate to heavy rainfall across multiple regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, and Coastal counties.

According to the department, counties expected to receive significant rainfall include:

  • Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley: Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, and Narok.
  • Highlands East of the Rift Valley: Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.
  • Coast: Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River County.

Kenya Met noted that:

“Sunny intervals are expected in the mornings, though occasional rains may occur over a few places. Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places.”

In Nairobi and other parts of the Highlands East region, residents should expect cloudy mornings followed by sunny intervals, with light afternoon and nighttime showers.

Meanwhile, coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale are likely to experience light rain during morning hours throughout the forecast period.

The department also issued an advisory for very cold nights in counties such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Murang’a, and Nairobi, where temperatures are expected to drop to between 6°C and 8°C.

On the other hand, hot daytime temperatures—reaching up to 36°C—are anticipated in Coastal, Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria Basin counties. This includes Mombasa, Lamu, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Homa Bay, and Siaya.

The department urged citizens to remain alert for potential flash floods, dress warmly in cold-prone areas, and avoid unnecessary exposure to extreme weather changes.
