Kenya Braces for Heavy Rains, Strong Winds in Coming Week — Met Department
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a week-long weather advisory warning of increased rainfall, isolated storms, and strong winds across several regions from Tuesday, August 12, to Monday, August 18, 2025.
According to the forecast, the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and parts of the North-western region will experience intensified rainfall, with some areas likely to see localised thunderstorms. Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are also expected in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands, and the Rift Valley.
Temperature variations will be significant, with North-eastern and North-western regions recording daytime highs above 30°C, while night-time lows could drop below 10°C in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt Kilimanjaro.
The department has also cautioned of strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) in the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, and parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western regions.
Regional outlook:
- Western & Rift Valley: Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected, with daytime highs of 28–30°C and night lows around 11°C.
- North-western (Turkana, Samburu): Mostly sunny early in the week, with isolated storms later. Highs may peak at 35°C, with lows dropping to 8°C.
- Central Kenya & Nairobi: Cloudy mornings, sunny breaks, and afternoon showers; temperatures will range between 8°C and 27°C.
- North-eastern (Mandera, Garissa, Wajir): Predominantly dry and sunny, with possible light showers from Saturday; highs of 33–35°C.
- South-eastern Lowlands: Cloudy mornings and sunny afternoons, with cool nights as low as 9°C.
- Coastal Region (Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu): Warm, sunny intervals with occasional showers on Friday and Saturday; highs of 28–30°C and humid nights at 19–21°C.
The public is advised to remain vigilant in flood-prone areas, heed marine safety advisories, and stay updated on evolving weather conditions.
