KeNHA Announces 8-Hour Traffic Disruption on Nairobi Southern Bypass This Weekend
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced an eight-hour traffic disruption along a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass this weekend to facilitate essential road monitoring works.
In a public notice issued on Monday, June 2, KeNHA stated that the disruption will affect the section of the bypass near the entrance to the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) camp, directly opposite Nairobi National Park.
The planned closure will take place from 10:00 PM on Saturday, June 7, to 8:00 AM on Sunday, June 8.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority wishes to notify the public that a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass near the entrance of the CRBC Camp will experience a temporary traffic disruption,” the statement read. “The disruption follows the installation of stress-strain sensors on the highway pavement.”
Stress-strain sensors are high-precision instruments embedded in road surfaces to measure how different pavement layers respond to various forces, particularly traffic loads from heavy commercial vehicles.
The sensors collect real-time data on road stress, enabling KeNHA to assess durability and structural integrity. This data will be used to guide future maintenance schedules, upgrade plans, and construction standards for roads like the Southern Bypass.
KeNHA clarified that the disruption will affect only one outer lane along a 10-metre stretch of the highway. The remaining lanes will remain open to traffic.
Motorists are advised to approach the affected section with caution and follow instructions from traffic marshals and police officers who will be present to manage the flow.
This is not the first time KeNHA has closed sections of the Southern Bypass. In December 2024, the Authority temporarily shut down the road to rehabilitate expansion joints on several bridges and reconstruct concrete pavements near the Virtual Weighbridge.
The Southern Bypass remains a crucial route for long-distance traffic and commercial transport, making its upkeep vital to Nairobi’s transport infrastructure.
KeNHA thanked the public for their patience and cooperation as it continues efforts to maintain road safety and longevity.
