Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were Killed After Using Son’s Car to Evade Assassins
Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were was tragically gunned down on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, in what authorities are now calling a “highly coordinated assassination.” Despite a last-minute decision to switch vehicles in a bid to dodge potential attackers, the second-term lawmaker was fatally shot near the City Mortuary Roundabout in Nairobi.
Sources close to the late MP revealed that Ong’ondo sensed a looming threat and opted to abandon his official vehicle in favour of a Toyota Crown belonging to his son. The move was meant to disguise his movement and confuse any assailants who may have been tracking him. Unfortunately, the effort proved futile.
It is now emerging that the lawmaker specifically chose to use his son’s car—an unassuming saloon model—in a deliberate attempt to throw off potential assassins who might have been monitoring his official vehicle. The plan, while tactically sound on paper, did not succeed in protecting him from what investigators are describing as a well-planned ambush.
According to investigators, the MP had spent the afternoon at Parliament Buildings, participating in the day’s legislative session, including deliberations on the Finance Bill 2025. He left the premises at around 7:24 p.m. and made a brief stop to withdraw cash at an M-Pesa outlet in the city centre.
As he made his way along Valley Road toward Ngong Road, unknown assailants on a motorbike intercepted his vehicle at the City Mortuary Roundabout. One of the gunmen reportedly dismounted and opened fire directly at the MP’s seat, before fleeing the scene with the accomplice.
Ong’ondo’s driver and bodyguard, who both survived the attack, rushed him to The Nairobi Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. A specialised unit, led by DCI Director Martin Nyaguto, visited the scene on Thursday to collect forensic evidence and reconstruct the MP’s final moments.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured the nation that no stone will be left unturned in the quest to bring the perpetrators to justice. “This was a well-coordinated attack, likely executed by individuals with military or intelligence training,” a senior DCI official said.
Ong’ondo had reportedly voiced concerns about his personal security in recent months, raising fears that he may have been aware of a plot against his life.
A burial committee convened at his Karen residence has set May 9 as the official date for his interment.
