Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Fatally Shot in Nairobi in Suspected Targeted Attack
Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were has been shot dead in what appears to be a brazen targeted attack near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi on Wednesday evening.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic incident occurred at approximately 7:30 PM when two assailants riding a motorcycle approached the MP’s vehicle. One of the attackers reportedly disembarked and fired multiple shots at close range, fatally wounding the legislator. His driver was unharmed, further fueling speculation that the gunmen were specifically targeting the MP.
Nearby traffic police officers, who were manning the busy roundabout at the time, reportedly witnessed the shooting and responded immediately. MP Were was quickly rushed to Nairobi Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The identities of the assailants remain unknown, and authorities have yet to release an official statement on possible motives behind the killing. Investigations are currently underway, with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reviewing CCTV footage from the area and appealing to members of the public for any information that could aid in apprehending the culprits.
The shocking assassination has sparked outrage and grief among Kenyans, with leaders from across the political divide calling for swift justice.
Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was serving his second term in Parliament, was known for his vocal stance on social justice and rural development. His sudden death leaves a void in Homa Bay politics and raises serious concerns about the safety of public officials.
Security has since been heightened in the capital as detectives pursue leads to bring the killers to justice.
