Inside President Ruto’s Meeting with France’s Emmanuel Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to deepen bilateral ties with Kenya following a high-level meeting with President William Ruto in Seville, Spain. The leaders met on the sidelines of the Pact for Prosperity, People and the Planet forum on Monday, June 30, 2025.
The discussions centered on sustainable development, regional peace, and collaboration in energy, agriculture, and transport infrastructure. President Macron emphasized that France and Kenya share a common vision—economic growth should not come at the cost of environmental sustainability.
“With President @williamsruto, we share a common commitment: that no country should have to choose between development and protecting the planet,” Macron shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Bilateral Projects and Regional Peace
Macron highlighted several ongoing bilateral projects between France and Kenya, including:
- Energy transition initiatives
- Sustainable agriculture programs
- Transport infrastructure development
These efforts underscore a mutual focus on long-term solutions to pressing development challenges.
The two presidents also addressed peace and security concerns in East and Central Africa, reaffirming their joint commitment to stability in the Great Lakes region, Sudan, and Somalia—regions grappling with humanitarian and security crises.
“We reaffirmed our shared commitment to peace and security in the Great Lakes region, Sudan, and Somalia,” Macron stated.
Africa-France Summit Comes to Nairobi
Kenya is set to make history as the first non-Francophone African nation to host the Africa-France Summit in 2026. The decision, announced during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, marks a significant departure from the tradition of hosting the event in France or Francophone African countries.
The summit will be co-chaired by Presidents Ruto and Macron and is expected to focus on innovative partnerships for development, climate action, and regional cooperation.
This development not only underscores France’s confidence in Kenya’s leadership but also positions Nairobi as a continental hub for diplomacy and sustainability—a role that has grown under Ruto’s leadership, especially following his stewardship of the 2023 African Climate Summit.
