Homa Bay MP Demands Action Against Apostle Ng’ang’a Over Viral Slapping Video
Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament, Peter Kaluma, has called for immediate legal action against controversial preacher Apostle James Ng’ang’a, following the circulation of a viral video showing the cleric slapping a congregant during a church service.
In the undated clip filmed at Neno Evangelism Centre, Ng’ang’a is seen walking up to a man seated in the front row and delivering two slaps to his face, allegedly for falling asleep during the sermon.
“Amka, Kwenda uko nyuma,” (Wake up, go to the back), the preacher is heard shouting as the stunned man is ordered to leave the front pews.
Ng’ang’a then confronts a woman who had been seated next to the man, questioning why she did not wake him up. “Na wewe kwanini analala hapa na unamuona?” (Why was he sleeping and you’re just watching?), he asked.
The woman defended herself, saying she was focused on the preaching and did not notice her neighbor had dozed off. She further stated, “Kila mtu abebe msalaba wake,” (Everyone should carry their own cross), a response that prompted the preacher to let her off with a warning and instruct her to also move to the back.
The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with MP Kaluma urging anyone who has ever been assaulted by Ng’ang’a or witnessed similar behavior to come forward.
“Whoever knows the guy he is assaulting in this video or any of the many worshippers he has ever assaulted should report to the nearest police station or see me immediately for urgent action,” Kaluma said in a statement shared on social media.
The lawmaker also appealed to the Registrar of Societies to intervene and investigate the conduct at Neno Evangelism Centre before, in his words, “worse happens.”
While Apostle Ng’ang’a has remained defiant in past controversies, this latest episode has reignited debate around religious accountability and the limits of pastoral authority in Kenya’s churches.
As the video continues to spark outrage online, Kenyans are watching closely to see whether any formal legal or regulatory steps will be taken.
