Guardiola Urges Man City to Fight for Champions League Spot After Forest Defeat
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has warned his struggling squad that securing a Champions League place will not “fall from the sky” after their disappointing 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
City’s frustrating season continued as Callum Hudson-Odoi netted the decisive goal in the 83rd minute, beating goalkeeper Ederson at his near post. The defeat marked City’s ninth loss of the campaign—their highest since the 2019-20 season—putting their top-four hopes under serious threat.
Guardiola made it clear that his side must quickly rediscover their form if they are to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
“We have to win games. We are not winning enough in a row to be secure,” Guardiola said. “There are 10 games left, and we have to win a lot of them to qualify. This is how it is. It doesn’t just happen by itself.”
The defending Premier League champions now sit fourth, four points behind third-placed Forest and only one point ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea, who face Leicester on Sunday.
City’s Mistakes Proving Costly
City’s season has been plagued by errors, and Ederson’s mistake in allowing Hudson-Odoi’s shot to slip past him was another costly moment. However, Guardiola refused to place the blame on his goalkeeper.
“It is what it is. We can’t blame a player; I prefer to praise than blame,” he said. “I didn’t see the action, but it happens in football.”
With a crucial fixture against Brighton next Saturday before the international break, Guardiola knows his side must respond urgently to avoid missing out on a top-four finish.
Forest Enjoying Dream Season
While City’s struggles continue, Nottingham Forest are enjoying a remarkable campaign under Nuno Espírito Santo. The win over City was their first league victory against the champions since 1997 and bolstered their hopes of returning to the Champions League for the first time since the 1980-81 season.
Nuno, however, urged his players to stay focused despite the significance of the result.
“We are very happy. We played a very good game against a tough team,” Nuno said. “It gives you confidence to compete against the best, but it doesn’t change the challenge ahead. The Premier League is tough, and every match is a fight.”
Forest also took a moment to send well wishes to club legend Stuart Pearce, who is recovering in a Canadian hospital after falling ill on a flight from Las Vegas.
“Stuart is not just a legend of our club; he is part of our family,” Nuno said. “We all send him our very best wishes and hope he has a full and fast recovery.”
With 10 games left in the season, both City and Forest are fighting for their European dreams—but heading in opposite directions.
