Governor Wamatangi’s Home Raided as EACC Probes Kiambu Corruption Scandal
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday conducted a major operation targeting Kiambu Governor Paul Njoroge Kimani, popularly known as Wamatangi, along with eight other senior county officials. The raids, carried out at multiple residences and offices, are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial and procurement malpractices within the Kiambu County Government.
According to the EACC, the probe centers around a Ksh.230 million contract awarded during the 2022/2023 financial year for the supply, installation, and support of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Authorities suspect serious irregularities, including conflict of interest, procurement fraud, and abuse of office.
In a statement released on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Governor Wamatangi urged residents of Kiambu to remain calm and maintain peace. “To the great people of Kiambu County, I urge you to remain calm and peaceful. We shall overcome. We will never give in to intimidation! I will address the media shortly at the EACC Headquarters, Integrity House, Nairobi,” the governor posted.
Shortly after the raid, protests erupted outside the governor’s residence. Supporters waving branches and chanting songs gathered in solidarity, calling for his immediate release. Similar demonstrations were later reported at the EACC Headquarters, where Wamatangi was being questioned.
The Commission confirmed that the operation had yielded “critical evidentiary material” to support their case. This included the seizure of Ksh.12 million in cash and an additional USD 13,000 (approximately Ksh.1.6 million) from Governor Wamatangi’s home.
“Upon conclusion of the investigation, the findings will guide the appropriate course of action which may include the prosecution of any individuals found culpable, the forfeiture of unexplained assets, and the confiscation of proceeds linked to corruption,” read an official statement from EACC.
The high-profile probe underscores the EACC’s ongoing efforts to hold public officials accountable and combat graft at both national and county levels. As the case unfolds, the public awaits further details on the next legal steps against those implicated in the scandal.
