Government Orders Urgent Recall of Substandard Paracetamol Injections in Kenya

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has sounded the alarm over several substandard batches of paracetamol 1000 mg/100 ml injections currently circulating in the Kenyan market. In an official statement released on Thursday, April 24, 2025, PPB Chief Executive Officer Dr Fred Siyoi ordered the immediate recall of the affected products.

According to the Board, the flagged batches, sold under the brand names Lumidol, Blink, and Paragen, exhibited a suspicious colour change — a critical indicator of compromised quality. The injections were all manufactured by KamlaAmrut Pharmaceutical LLP, an India-based company.

Flagged Products:

  • Lumidol Injection: Batch Numbers CM4594007, CM4594008, CM4594009
  • Blink Injection: Batch Numbers CS4594004, CS4594005
  • Paragen Injection: Batch Number K4290027

Dr Siyoi emphasized that all pharmacies, healthcare providers, and members of the public must “immediately cease further distribution, sale, issuing, or use” of the listed batches. He further urged that the affected products be returned to the nearest health facility or supplier without delay.

“The Board is committed to ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicines in the market to protect public health,” Dr Siyoi said. He added that PPB would continue thorough investigations in collaboration with other relevant agencies to ensure full accountability.

The PPB has also encouraged members of the public to report any suspected cases of substandard medicines or adverse drug reactions through their available reporting channels or by visiting the nearest healthcare facility.

This development comes at a time when drug safety is under increased scrutiny, following previous incidents involving counterfeit and substandard medical products.

How to Report: Members of the public are urged to report any concerns through the Pharmacy and Poisons Board’s hotline or online platforms to aid in safeguarding the health of Kenyans.
