Gachagua Raises Alarm Over Alleged Threats to His Life, Lists Six ‘Planned’ Attacks
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that his life, as well as the safety of his family, supporters, and property, is under serious threat. In a detailed letter addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja — and copied to President William Ruto — Gachagua outlined a string of incidents he describes as “coordinated and deliberate attempts” on his life.
The letter, dated April 15, 2025, paints a worrying picture of alleged security failures, targeted intimidation, and increasing surveillance, which Gachagua believes are politically motivated.
According to the former Deputy President, the threats began in late 2024, just weeks after his impeachment from office in October. He cited a funeral service incident in Limuru, Kiambu County, on November 28, 2024, where he claims an “assassination attempt” was made in public view. Despite the visibility of the attack, he says no arrests were made.
“I was targeted in broad daylight and left exposed. No investigations followed, which raises serious questions,” Gachagua wrote.
The former DP also highlighted a chilling episode on December 19, 2024, in Makueni County, where he was allegedly tailed by an unmarked car for over 150 kilometers. Though no direct confrontation occurred, he suggested that the trailing was connected to what he termed “escalated surveillance” believed to involve National Intelligence Service (NIS) operatives.
Gachagua further alleged that on December 28, 2024, a political meeting in Shamata, Nyandarua County, was violently disrupted by what he described as an “organized criminal gang.” A tear gas canister was reportedly hurled at him during the chaos — an act he says was intended to destabilize the crowd and possibly facilitate his assassination.
Adding to the list of troubling claims, Gachagua said his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, was attacked on January 18, 2025, during a prayer rally at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri Town. He said she was rescued by private security after an alleged security lapse. Gachagua noted that he had deliberately skipped the event after receiving an intelligence tip-off suggesting danger.
In his strongly worded letter, Gachagua accused the Inspector General of failing in his constitutional role, suggesting that law enforcement has instead become complicit in enabling threats and violence.
“As you are aware, you have a constitutional duty to protect the life and property of every Kenyan. In this case, Kanja, you are perpetuating crime and violence,” he said.
The former Deputy President is now calling for immediate investigations into the incidents and for his security detail to be reinstated. Political observers say the claims raise broader concerns about political safety, especially in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
As of the time of publishing, there has been no official response from the Office of the Inspector General or State House regarding Gachagua’s claims.
