Gachagua Hints at Coalition with Kalonzo, Wamalwa & Matiang’i to Unseat Ruto in 2027
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted at the formation of a new political coalition with key opposition figures, including Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, aimed at challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the burial ceremony of Reverend Joseph Nzola in Machakos, Gachagua claimed the alliance was being formed in response to calls from Kenyans demanding fresh leadership.
“We have listened to Kenyans who have said we come together and form a government that would take the country forward. We are doing just that with Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Fred Matiang’i with me in the kitchen cooking it up,” Gachagua said.
He emphasized Kalonzo’s central role in the discussions, particularly in appealing to the Ukambani vote. “To the people of Ukambani, Kalonzo Musyoka is a major player in this agreement,” he added.
Gachagua also accused the current government of attempts to destabilize the opposition alliance ahead of the polls. However, he maintained that the leaders would keep their strategy secret until December 2026.
“They (the government) are trying to tear us apart well before the elections, but I want to tell you we are not stupid. We will not disagree. We will stay quiet and only speak in December 2026 before the elections,” he said.
Since exiting office, Gachagua has emerged as one of Ruto’s fiercest critics, frequently vowing to make him a one-term president. His rallies have not been without incident, with reports of disruptions and attacks on his motorcade.
Gachagua is aligning with other dissenting voices such as Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party and other disgruntled opposition figures who have distanced themselves from Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
Meanwhile, Jubilee Party, now led by Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, has endorsed Matiang’i as its presidential flag-bearer for the upcoming elections. Despite voicing concerns about coalition instability and possible infiltration by government operatives, Kioni reaffirmed that the opposition remains united in its desire to remove Ruto from power.
President Ruto has dismissed the growing opposition alliance as inconsequential, stating he is confident of a second term and is prepared to counter any political threats.
The emerging alliance signals a potentially dramatic political showdown in 2027, with key figures from previous administrations regrouping to take on Kenya Kwanza’s dominance.
