Gachagua Accuses Ruto of Building Road to Personal Hotel, Ignoring Meru Development
Democracy for Citizen Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of using state resources to construct a road leading to a luxury hotel allegedly owned by the Head of State in Meru County.
Speaking in Meru during the launch of his three-day political tour of the region, Gachagua called on residents to boycott the hotel, claiming it represents misplaced priorities by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Instead of building roads to support farmers and take produce to the factory, you are building a road to your hotel. Do you think the people of Meru are foolish?” Gachagua said to a cheering crowd. “Kasongo anyolewe, asinyolewe.”
Gachagua, who was ousted as Deputy President earlier this year, accused Ruto of plotting his downfall using what he described as trumped-up charges related to a controversial land purchase in Meru. He claimed the President’s plan was to divide the Mt. Kenya region and dominate it politically, likening Ruto’s strategy to the long rule of former President Moi.
“I could never join someone who kills children. He wanted to divide the mountain so he could sit on us the way Moi did for 24 years. He used that soprano to push Meru, Kikuyu, and Embu aside and rule over us,” Gachagua claimed.
He also took aim at Members of Parliament who supported his impeachment, accusing them of betraying their constituents for personal gain. “These MPs helped deny the region key development projects. But our strength lies in unity.”
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary and current DCP National Organising Secretary Mithika Linturi backed Gachagua’s remarks, telling Meru residents not to cower in the face of political threats.
“We are leading from the front. Even if we don’t have MPs, Meru does not lack patriotic leaders ready to work for liberation,” Linturi said.
Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara also joined the attack on the government, criticizing the President for plunging the country into debt and neglecting education.
“Youth are our future, but Kasongo is denying them a chance. He’s taking loans while our children are not even attending school,” she said.
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has been vocal in his criticism of President Ruto, accusing the Kenya Kwanza government of economic mismanagement and betrayal of Mt. Kenya voters.
His visit to Meru marks the latest step in a nationwide campaign to reclaim influence and rally opposition to the current administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
