Gachagua Accused of Orchestrating Violence in Embu Gen Z Protests

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of sponsoring goons to infiltrate the recent Gen Z-led protests in Embu, leading to destruction and injuries.

Speaking to the press after visiting affected sites in Embu town and Kiritiri, the county chief described the events as a politically motivated assault on her administration. She claimed that Gachagua and a group of local leaders were behind the chaos, which she termed a “targeted sabotage” of her leadership.

“I am tired of the constant sabotage. These protests were hijacked and weaponized to paint my government as weak, yet we know where the orders were coming from,” she said.

She pointed fingers at a recent political event in Embu, where Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji was unveiled as the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) gubernatorial candidate for 2027. According to her, the endorsement was part of a broader plot to destabilize Embu County.

“These are not mere demonstrations — this is a targeted attack on Embu’s stability and prosperity. I will not allow anyone, regardless of their political stature, to scare away investors or paralyze services,” she added.

She accused MP Mukunji of acting as Gachagua’s proxy, mobilizing and coordinating the alleged violent activities. During the protests, 23 people were injured, including 18 police officers. One officer remains in critical condition at Embu Level 5 Hospital.

Several government and private facilities were damaged, including offices of KRA, NSSF, Post Bank, National Government, and Safaricom’s Embu branch.

While reaffirming her support for peaceful protests, the county boss condemned political interference and vowed to protect Embu’s peace and development.

“We will not allow genuine grievances to be hijacked by political opportunists,” she stated.
