Fred Matiang’i to Make First Public Appearance in Gusii Region on May 2
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i is set to make his first public appearance since returning to the country, marking a significant political moment as 2027 election speculation intensifies. The event, scheduled for Friday, May 2, will take place in the Gusii region, a political stronghold and home to Matiang’i.
In an official press statement, Matiang’i confirmed that he would be joined by top elected leaders from the Gusii region, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo. Senators Momoima Onyonka (Kisii) and Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), as well as Members of Parliament and County Assemblies from the area, are also expected to accompany him.
“Dr Fred Matiang’i is pleased to inform the public that he will make his first public appearance this year in the Gusii region on Friday, May 2, 2025,” read part of the statement.
Matiang’i is expected to engage the public and local leadership during an official tour covering Kisii and Nyamira Counties. His return to public life has reignited discussions about his potential presidential run in 2027, with political heavyweights and parties beginning to rally behind his yet-to-be-official candidacy.
Since his return on the night of April 17, Matiang’i has held a series of high-profile political meetings. Among those who welcomed him back were Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, both strong advocates of his anticipated presidential bid.
Although Matiang’i has not formally declared his presidential ambitions, the Jubilee Party, under Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni, has already endorsed him as their preferred flagbearer for 2027. He has also started aligning himself with opposition leaders and strategists critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
On Tuesday, he joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, PLP’s Martha Karua, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, and former Cabinet Secretaries Mukhisa Kituyi, Mithika Linturi, and Justin Muturi in a pivotal meeting in Nairobi. The leaders are reportedly laying the groundwork for a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.
Matiang’i’s public appearance in Gusii will be closely watched by both supporters and political analysts, as it signals the start of what may become a vigorous campaign season. His visibility in the region could also energize his base and spark further endorsements.
