FKF Engages DCI, EACC in Goalkeeper Patrick Matasi Match-Fixing Probe
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has called upon the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate goalkeeper Patrick Matasi over allegations of match-fixing.
Letters sent to the two agencies, seen by The Eastleigh Voice, indicate that FKF is seeking further assistance in unearthing the circumstances surrounding the claims. FKF, citing Section VII (2) of its Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations (2016), has barred the Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper from participating in all FKF-sanctioned competitions pending investigations.
Legal Implications and FKF’s Position
In correspondence to both the EACC and DCI, FKF underscored the seriousness of match manipulation, describing it as a criminal activity akin to obtaining money by false pretense—a violation of Section 313 of the Penal Code. Additionally, FKF pointed out that attempts or conspiracies to engage in match manipulation fall under Section 47A of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
While the federation acknowledges that match manipulation is not explicitly addressed in Kenya’s criminal justice system, it remains committed to tackling the issue by working with relevant authorities.
Internal and External Investigations Underway
FKF also clarified that an internal investigation is ongoing, in accordance with its regulations. However, to ensure a thorough probe, the federation has sought state agencies’ support in fully investigating Matasi’s actions and identifying any possible accomplices.
Once the investigation is complete, FKF stated that it would take appropriate action based on its regulations and that further revelations could emerge.
“Your assistance in this matter will be highly appreciated as the Federation works towards curbing this vice and engaging the relevant body for the necessary legislative amendments to criminalise this vice,” FKF concluded in the letter.
As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on the authorities to determine the extent of the allegations and whether further legal measures will be taken against those involved in match-fixing scandals in Kenyan football.
