EXCLUSIVE: 15 Colleges Busted for Issuing Fake Degrees in Kenya
The Commission for University Education (CUE) has officially flagged 15 academic institutions across Kenya for illegally offering unrecognized degree and postgraduate programs, raising fresh concerns about the integrity of the country’s higher education system.
In a strongly worded notice published in Tuesday’s edition of MyGov, CUE warned the public that these institutions are not accredited to award degrees and that any qualifications issued by them will not be recognized in Kenya.
“Any institution purporting to operate as a university or offer degree-level qualifications without appearing on the Commission’s official list is operating illegally,” CUE stated.
The 15 Institutions Offering Fake Degrees
The move comes after a dramatic DCI raid during a graduation event for Northwestern Christian University in Mombasa, which brought national attention to a growing underground network of unaccredited colleges and fraudulent academic credentials.
Here is the full list of the 15 institutions named by CUE:
No. | Institution Name | County |
---|---|---|
1 | Eldoret Bible College | Uasin Gishu |
2 | Al-Munawarrah College | Mombasa |
3 | Grace Life Bible College | Vihiga |
4 | Africa Theological Seminary | Kitale |
5 | Regions Beyond Ministry Bible College | Thika |
6 | Baraton College | Kapsabet |
7 | The Africa Talent University | Kisumu |
8 | Breakthrough Bible College | Nairobi |
9 | Theophillus Theological College | Kiambu |
10 | Northwestern Christian University | Kakamega |
11 | Logos University | Kakamega |
12 | Harvest Land University | Kisumu |
13 | Word of Faith Bible College | Vihiga |
14 | Kenya Anglican University – Kanyuambora Campus | Embu |
15 | The East African University Bradegate International Univ. | Nyeri |
CUE has emphasized that degrees from these institutions are invalid, warning students, employers, and academic institutions to exercise vigilance when dealing with academic documents.
What’s Legitimate?
To help differentiate legitimate universities from bogus ones, CUE has also released an updated list of recognized institutions:
- Public Universities: 35
- Specialized Public Universities: 3
- Public University Constituent Colleges: 5
- Chartered Private Universities: 28
- Private Constituent Colleges: 2
- Universities with Interim Letters of Authority: 6
This classification is crucial for students seeking to enroll, and for employers verifying credentials.
Crackdown to Continue
Education authorities, in collaboration with investigative agencies, say this is just the beginning. The CUE has promised more rigorous vetting and public awareness campaigns, warning that more illegal colleges may be uncovered soon.
This development is expected to shake up the academic sector, especially among religious and theological colleges, many of which operate without oversight.
