EPRA Announces Slight Reduction in Fuel Prices in Latest Review

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced a marginal drop in fuel prices in its latest monthly review, offering slight relief to motorists and households across the country.

In the review released on Sunday, September 14, the cost of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene has been reduced by Sh0.79, Sh0.11, and Sh0.80 per litre respectively. The revised pump prices will take effect from midnight and remain in place for the next 30 days.

In Nairobi, motorists will now pay Sh184.52 for Super Petrol, Sh171.47 for Diesel, and Sh154.78 for Kerosene. According to EPRA, the new prices already include the 16 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) as mandated by the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024, and excise duty adjustments for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.

Elsewhere across the country, motorists in Mombasa will pay Sh181.21 for Super Petrol, Sh168.19 for Diesel, and Sh151.49 for Kerosene. In Nakuru, the prices stand at Sh183.56, Sh170.87, and Sh154.21 respectively. Eldoret and Kisumu will see Super Petrol retail at Sh184.38 and Sh184.37, Diesel at Sh171.68, and Kerosene at Sh155.03.

The September review follows a similar trend in August, when EPRA reduced fuel prices by Sh1 per litre for Super Petrol and Kerosene, while Diesel remained unchanged. At that time, fuel in Nairobi retailed at Sh185.31 for Super Petrol, Sh171.58 for Diesel, and Sh155.58 for Kerosene.

In contrast, July’s review saw sharp increases, with Super Petrol rising by Sh8.99, Diesel by Sh8.67, and Kerosene by Sh9.65 per litre. EPRA attributed the spike to heightened freight costs triggered by shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.

Kenya, which imports all its petroleum products, remains heavily exposed to global oil price fluctuations, shipping challenges, and foreign exchange movements. For households and businesses, even minor shifts in fuel costs have a ripple effect on transport fares, electricity, and the overall cost of living.

With this latest reduction, motorists and households will experience only minimal relief at a time when fuel prices continue to play a central role in Kenya’s inflation dynamics.
