Elon Musk’s X Suffers Massive Cyberattack, Leading to Widespread Outages
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), experienced a massive cyberattack on Monday, causing widespread outages that left millions of users unable to access the site. The disruptions began at approximately 2:30 p.m. Kenyan time, with users struggling to load both the website and the mobile app. While some services were partially restored later in the evening, many users continued facing issues well into the night.
Widespread Disruptions and User Reactions
The outage on X, a platform relied upon by millions for real-time news and social interaction, sent users scrambling to alternative platforms such as Reddit and Telegram to seek updates. The disruption particularly affected XSpaces, the platform’s audio-based discussion feature, forcing many scheduled discussions to be postponed.
One of the notable disruptions was experienced by blockchain company Xenea, which had to postpone an eagerly anticipated announcement. “X is down in some regions, and we’re unable to host the Space as planned. For now, we’ll reschedule and aim to hold it tomorrow at the same time if X has recovered by then. We apologize to everyone who has been waiting, but since this is a platform issue, there’s nothing we can do,” Xenea posted on its handle.
Musk Confirms Cyberattack
Elon Musk addressed the situation, confirming that X had been the target of a large-scale cyberattack. “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against 𝕏. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing…,” Musk stated.
The exact source of the attack remains unknown, but experts speculate that it could have been a coordinated effort by hackers or even a nation-state-sponsored cyber assault. Given that X has been a hub for political discourse and major global discussions, concerns have risen over the platform’s cybersecurity measures and its ability to withstand future attacks.
What’s Next for X?
While some functionality has returned, users are still reporting issues with accessing certain features. X’s technical team is working to restore full service, but the attack has raised serious questions about the platform’s vulnerability to large-scale cyber threats. If this attack is indeed linked to a state-sponsored entity, it could mark a significant escalation in cybersecurity threats targeting social media platforms.
As X continues its investigation, users are urged to stay updated through alternative channels and exercise caution, especially when interacting with potentially compromised accounts. The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected in the coming hours.
Nairobian will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information emerges.
