Elon Musk Exits Trump Administration After Leading Cost-Cutting Mission

Elon Musk is stepping down from his government role as top adviser to President Donald Trump after leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a position focused on slashing federal spending and overhauling government agencies.

Musk’s departure, announced Wednesday, ends a polarizing tenure marked by massive layoffs, restructuring of several departments, and intense political resistance. Though his initial goal was to trim $2 trillion in spending, Musk ultimately managed just $150 billion, citing bureaucratic pushback and internal conflicts.

The billionaire entrepreneur, better known for leading Tesla and SpaceX, found Washington’s slow pace and entrenched systems frustrating. His departure comes as he shifts attention back to his companies.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X, the platform he owns. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

The White House confirmed the resignation. Musk’s exit follows recent criticism of Trump’s legislative centerpiece, a sprawling bill combining tax cuts with increased spending. Musk expressed disappointment with the bill, calling it a “massive spending bill” that undermined DOGE’s goals.

“I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful,” Musk quipped. “But I don’t know if it could be both.”

Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin sympathized with Musk’s frustrations, signaling potential resistance in the Senate. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Musk’s efforts and pledged to continue implementing DOGE’s findings.

The White House is sending a package of spending rescissions to Congress, including cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and foreign aid.

Musk’s influence in Washington, though fading, may still shape the Senate’s debate over the controversial bill. His experience has made him more reserved in political spending, with Musk admitting, “I think I’ve done enough.”

Once an enthusiastic supporter of Trump, Musk helped fund his campaign and promote government reform. Trump in return praised Musk as “a truly great American.”

Whether Musk’s parting critique will influence final negotiations on the legislation remains unclear. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would raise deficits by $3.8 trillion over ten years, while proposed cuts would only shave off about $1 trillion.

Outside analysts remain skeptical, but Musk’s bold entry and dramatic exit from public service have undeniably left a mark on Washington’s political landscape.
