Eliud Kipchoge Promises More After Sixth-Place Finish at London Marathon

Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has vowed to continue pushing his limits after an uncharacteristic sixth-place finish at the London Marathon on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

In a heartfelt statement released just hours after the race, Kipchoge, 40, displayed grace and resilience, acknowledging the challenges he faced while expressing optimism about the future. “In sport, as in life, not every attempt turns into victory, but each one brings meaning,” Kipchoge said.

Despite missing out on the podium, the two-time Olympic champion remained upbeat, describing his London experience as motivating and full of hope. “I am leaving London feeling motivated, happy, and hungry for the challenges ahead,” he added.

Kipchoge, who won the London Marathon in 2019 and is widely hailed as the greatest marathoner in history, took time to thank the fans for their unwavering support. “Thank you for all your cheers on the course. This race and these fans have the biggest place in my heart,” he said.

The 2025 edition of the London Marathon saw Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe dominate the race, clocking an impressive 2:02:26 to claim victory. Sawe, 29, who already boasts the fifth-fastest marathon time in history, was followed by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo (2:03:37) in second place and Kenya’s Alexander Mutiso Munyao (2:04:20) in third.

While Kipchoge’s sixth-place finish may hint at the inevitable slowing down that comes with age, it was by no means an endnote. The veteran athlete still pocketed a respectable Ksh971,000 (USD7,500) in prize money, not including a reported Ksh19.4 million (USD150,000) appearance fee.

Looking ahead, Kipchoge has set his sights on the Sydney Marathon scheduled for August 2025. With the 2024 Sydney Marathon champion, Brimin Kipkorir, recently banned by the Athletics Integrity Unit for doping offenses, the field is wide open—and Kipchoge could yet script another remarkable chapter in his storied career.

As one era of dominance evolves into another phase, fans around the world can rest assured: Eliud Kipchoge is not done yet.
