Elderly Passenger Dies Mid-Flight on Kenya Airways Journey from New York to Nairobi

Tragedy struck aboard a Kenya Airways flight on Friday morning after an elderly passenger passed away mid-air following a medical emergency. The incident occurred on flight KQ 003, which had departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, en route to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a statement, Kenya Airways confirmed the medical emergency unfolded at approximately 8:40am Nairobi time. The crew promptly alerted the airline’s Operations Control Centre after the passenger collapsed. In line with international aviation medical protocols, the flight crew—supported by three qualified medical professionals who volunteered their assistance—immediately initiated emergency response procedures.

“Despite the use of onboard medical equipment and sustained resuscitation efforts, the passenger was unfortunately pronounced dead at 9:10am,” the airline said.

In a bid to seek urgent medical intervention, the crew had considered diverting the flight to Entebbe International Airport in Uganda. However, after the passenger was declared dead, the aircraft resumed its original course to Nairobi.

The plane landed safely at JKIA at 10:27am, where it was received by medical personnel, airport security, and relevant government authorities.

“Kenya Airways is coordinating closely with the family of the deceased, local authorities, and aviation regulators to provide necessary support and determine the cause of death in line with applicable clinical protocols,” the statement read.

The airline extended its deepest condolences to the affected family and emphasized its commitment to upholding the privacy and dignity of those involved.

This incident highlights the critical importance of preparedness and swift response aboard long-haul flights, and Kenya Airways reaffirmed its adherence to international standards in managing in-flight medical emergencies.
