EACC Seizes Ksh.13.6M in Raid at Governor Wamatangi’s Home as Ksh.1.5B Scandal Unfolds
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has intensified its crackdown on graft in Kiambu County, seizing Ksh.13.6 million in a raid at Governor Paul Kimani Wamatangi’s residence. The operation, part of a wider investigation into alleged fraudulent dealings worth Ksh.1.5 billion, also targeted several other senior county officials.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the EACC confirmed that early morning raids were carried out across multiple locations, resulting in the seizure of Ksh.12 million and USD 13,000 (approx. Ksh.1.6 million) in cash from Wamatangi’s home. Authorities suspect the funds are proceeds of corruption linked to questionable contracts and ghost services.
The governor, who is currently under questioning at the EACC Headquarters in Nairobi, urged residents of Kiambu to remain calm. “To the great people of Kiambu County, I urge you to remain calm and peaceful. We shall overcome. We will never give in to intimidation! I will address the media shortly at the EACC Headquarters,” Wamatangi stated on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the EACC, the crackdown follows a prolonged investigation into two key transactions: a Ksh.230 million contract awarded to Filtronic International for an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, and a string of payments for services that reportedly never took place.
High-ranking officials now under investigation include County Secretary Peter Njoroge Ndegwa, Finance CEC Nancy Njeri Kirumba, Lands CEC Salome Muthoni Wainaina, Chief Officer of Finance William Kinyanjui Kimani, Supply Chain Director Phyllis Wanjiru Muiruri, Revenue Director Henry Mburu Waweru, and Bernard Kabalku Theuri—the director of Filtronic International Limited.
Preliminary findings indicate that procurement procedures were blatantly violated, with county officials allegedly conspiring with private firms to misappropriate public funds.
EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud revealed that critical evidence had been obtained, including financial documents and digital data, which could prove pivotal in prosecutions. “The discovery of large sums of unexplained cash in the possession of public officials is deeply concerning,” Mohamud said. “We will pursue asset recovery and criminal charges where appropriate.”
As the investigation progresses, Kenyans continue to watch closely, awaiting action from the judiciary to hold those responsible accountable and restore integrity in public service.
