Dutch Royal Visit to Kenya: Amnesty International Calls for Human Rights Focus

As Kenya prepares to host the King and Queen of the Netherlands for an official state visit, Amnesty International Kenya has urged the government to prioritize discussions on human rights during diplomatic engagements.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima are set to visit Kenya from March 18 to 20, 2025, in a move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. However, amid the planned celebrations and diplomatic engagements, human rights activists are calling for a shift in focus toward addressing pressing human rights concerns in Kenya.

Amnesty International’s Call for Action

Amnesty International Kenya’s Executive Director, Irungu Houghton, emphasized the urgency of addressing human rights violations, particularly in light of recent violent crackdowns on peaceful protests across the country.

“As Dutch authorities prepare for the official state visit to Kenya this week, Amnesty International calls on both governments to place human rights at the heart of their discussions. The recent brutal suppression of peaceful demonstrators, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries, cannot be ignored,” Houghton stated.

He pointed to disturbing reports indicating that over the past nine months, more than 60 protestors have lost their lives due to excessive police force. Additionally, masked agents have allegedly abducted more than 80 activists, with many of them being young Kenyan citizens. The continued abductions and cases of torture, he said, underscore the need for accountability and justice.

Balancing Diplomacy with Human Rights

The visit comes at the invitation of President William Ruto and is expected to further solidify the longstanding relationship between Kenya and the Netherlands. The two nations have a history of cooperation in trade, security, and development, with Kenya playing a vital role as a strategic gateway in East Africa, and the Netherlands serving as an economic hub in Europe.

However, Amnesty International argues that economic and military interests should not take precedence over fundamental human rights. The organization is calling on the Dutch delegation, including the three ministers accompanying the Royal Couple, to ensure that human rights remain a key agenda item throughout the visit.

“This visit should not merely be about economic deals and diplomatic pleasantries. The Dutch state visit provides a unique opportunity to hold open and transparent discussions on improving human rights in Kenya,” Houghton added.

Strengthening Kenya-Netherlands Relations

The Netherlands and Kenya share strong economic ties, particularly in agriculture, trade, and logistics. Both countries are also key players in international organizations such as the United Nations, where they collaborate on issues like democracy, the rule of law, and judicial independence.

Beyond economic engagement, the Dutch government has historically been a strong advocate for human rights and social justice worldwide. Activists hope that this visit will reinforce that commitment by advocating for accountability, justice, and protection of civil liberties in Kenya.

As Kenyans await the arrival of the Dutch Royal Family, the big question remains—will this visit mark a turning point in the fight for human rights in Kenya, or will economic interests once again overshadow the voices of the oppressed?
