Drama Unfolds as Two Female MPs Clash at Parliament Buildings
A dramatic confrontation between two female Members of Parliament shocked onlookers at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, after a physical altercation broke out between nominated ODM MP Umulkheir Harun and East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Falhada Iman.
The scuffle, captured on camera, showed the two legislators shouting at each other before things turned physical, as fellow female MPs attempted to intervene. Despite their efforts, the fight escalated, prompting one MP to call for assistance from other legislators standing nearby.
In the chaos, another MP could be heard pleading with witnesses to stop recording the altercation. Eventually, the sergeant-at-arms stepped in and managed to separate the two MPs, though verbal insults continued to fly.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Umulkheir described the confrontation as “deeply regrettable,” especially considering her position as a leader and a mother.
“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds—a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother,” she said. “I have made a complaint on the assault with the necessary institutions.”
Umulkheir emphasized her commitment to upholding dignity and denounced all forms of misconduct.
“While I am not providing further comments at this time, I remain fully committed to upholding the respectful and dignified standards expected of our institution and myself, particularly as a Muslim woman,” she stated.
She acknowledged the challenges of political life but reiterated that they do not excuse behavior that damages the integrity of Parliament.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about decorum within Parliament, as calls grow louder for lawmakers to uphold professionalism and serve as role models to the public.
Authorities are expected to investigate the matter, with possible disciplinary action looming for those involved.
