DCI Identifies Key Suspects in Assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Were – PS Omollo

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made a breakthrough in the ongoing probe into the assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were. According to Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, investigators have identified key suspects linked to the fatal shooting, which occurred on April 30 and sent shockwaves across the nation.

Speaking during a visit to Rangwe Constituency on Saturday, PS Omollo assured Kenyans that justice would be served and that no stone would be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book.

“As we speak today, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has provided an update. They have narrowed down the suspects who may have pulled the trigger,” he said. “In due course, those suspects and their accomplices will face the full force of law.”

Omollo conveyed his condolences to the family of the late MP and reiterated the government’s firm commitment to rooting out political violence, especially in Homa Bay County, a region that has struggled with political tensions in the past.

“Homa Bay County has had a long-standing reputation for political violence. I urge all leaders, whether elected or not, to take responsibility for maintaining peace and engaging in respectful, constructive dialogue,” the PS added.

Political Tensions Rise as Leaders Demand Accountability

While the government has promised swift action, tensions remain high, with local leaders calling for transparency and accountability. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga delivered an emotionally charged address at a memorial service, where she appeared to suggest that elements within the state could have played a role in the killing.

“Numerous times, Were reported that his life was in danger. I know that he even wrote to the Inspector General of Police, and I want him to tell us what action, if any, was taken,” Wanga said.

The governor further alleged that a coordinated campaign of disinformation had been launched to divert public attention from the true circumstances of the assassination.

“The disinformation that has flooded social media is no coincidence. It is well-orchestrated, mobilised, and funded — and the aim is to cover up the murder of Were,” she stated.

Governor Wanga questioned the slow response by police despite documented threats against the late MP, describing his death as both “inhumane and shameful.”

“Were was killed like a chicken, humiliated like a thief, yet he never stole from anyone. We don’t want stories or cover-ups,” she added.

A Nation Awaits Answers

As the investigation unfolds, pressure is mounting on the authorities to act decisively and transparently. Civil society groups and human rights organizations have also joined the call for justice, urging the government to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.

The late MP Charles Were was known for his vocal stance on local governance and youth empowerment in Kasipul constituency. His untimely death leaves a political and emotional void that his constituents say will not be easy to fill.

Kenyans continue to watch closely, hoping that justice for Were will not only be served but will also mark a turning point in the fight against political violence and impunity.
