DCI Arrests 38 Suspects in Nairobi Robberies During President Ruto’s City Tour
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended 38 suspects linked to a wave of robberies that targeted pedestrians and motorists along major Nairobi highways during President William Ruto’s recent tours of the city.
According to DCI reports, the suspects have been taken into custody across various police stations and are accused of orchestrating violent attacks along Thika Highway, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road. These locations have recently seen an upsurge in criminal activities, with gangs using motorcycles to ambush victims, snatch their belongings, and escape swiftly.
Stolen Items and Evidence Recovered
During the operation, detectives recovered seven motorcycles suspected to have been used in the robberies, alongside numerous mobile phones stolen from victims. These items are being held as evidence and will be presented in court.
Chaos Erupts After Ruto’s Mathare Rally
The spike in criminal activity was particularly evident on March 11, following President Ruto’s address in Mathare. As his convoy departed, large groups of youths engaged in looting and vandalism along key roads, including Thika Road, Juja Road, and Outering Road. Witnesses reported violent attacks on motorists, with many caught off guard while commuting in public transport and private vehicles.
Online footage depicted harrowing scenes of youths ambushing vehicles, smashing windows, and snatching valuables from unsuspecting passengers. Panic ensued as motorists attempted to maneuver through the chaos, with many opting for alternative routes to evade the aggressive mobs.
Police Response and Security Measures
To curb the escalating violence, law enforcement officers were deployed to affected areas, firing warning shots to disperse the rioters. Despite these measures, the unrest forced President Ruto to cancel a planned rally in Roysambu and return to the State House.
The security concerns extended beyond Mathare, as similar attacks were reported following Ruto’s tour of Eastlands on March 14. Commuters along Jogoo Road reported instances of mugging, with rowdy youth snatching bags and personal belongings from passersby and motorists alike.
Legal Proceedings and Public Advisory
The 38 arrested suspects are set to be arraigned in court on Monday, facing charges such as robbery with violence, preparation to commit a felony, and obstruction. The DCI has urged Nairobi residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to help curb the rising wave of crime.
Victims of these attacks have shared distressing accounts of being ambushed by armed gangs, often in broad daylight. Many have expressed frustration over the daring nature of these criminals and are calling for stricter measures to ensure safety in the city.
Government’s Crackdown on Crime
In response to the growing concerns, the DCI has increased security patrols and intensified intelligence operations to track down more suspects linked to the robberies. Law enforcement agencies have also called on members of the public to provide any relevant information that could aid in apprehending additional perpetrators.
As authorities work to restore order, Nairobi residents are urged to exercise caution and stay informed on safety advisories. The government’s response to this crisis will be crucial in determining how effectively security agencies can mitigate such incidents in the future.
