David Maraga Hints at Presidential Ambitions, Calls for Rule of Law
Nairobi — Former Chief Justice David Maraga has set tongues wagging with his latest remarks on Kenya’s leadership, igniting speculation about a possible presidential bid in 2027. Speaking at the People Dialogue Festival at Uhuru Park, the retired CJ did not explicitly declare his candidacy but left enough clues to fuel the debate.
“If I was to be given the privilege to govern this country, I would get everybody to obey the law,” Maraga stated firmly, emphasizing that strict adherence to the Constitution would be his guiding principle.
A Nation Crippled by Corruption
Maraga lamented the rampant corruption that continues to plague Kenya, describing it as the country’s biggest challenge. He argued that true leadership is about service, not self-enrichment, a jab seemingly aimed at politicians who exploit public office for personal gain.
“The moment you have everybody obeying the law, everything will fall into place,” he asserted. “The leadership we need is one that is accountable to the people, one that understands that being in power is a trusteeship, not a gateway to wealth.”
Presidential Term Limits and the Fight for Integrity
The former CJ also weighed in on recent attempts by some political figures to extend presidential term limits, dismissing them as selfish moves designed to consolidate power.
“Our Constitution is one of the best in the world,” he said. “The problem is that those in leadership have turned it into a tool for personal gain instead of a shield for the people.”
Maraga’s sharp words come amid heightened scrutiny of the Supreme Court, with multiple petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Martha Koome and other judges. However, Maraga dismissed these petitions as politically motivated distractions rather than genuine accountability measures.
“We have people filing baseless allegations, not in the interest of justice, but to serve personal and political ends,” he remarked, defending the judiciary’s independence.
Could Maraga Be Kenya’s Moral Compass?
While Maraga stopped short of announcing a presidential run, his rhetoric mirrored that of a statesman rallying for change. His emphasis on justice, accountability, and the rule of law resonated with many who believe Kenya needs a leader with moral authority.
As Kenya inches closer to the next general election, could the former Chief Justice throw his hat into the ring? If so, he would enter an arena dominated by career politicians—a bold move for a man known more for upholding the Constitution than making campaign promises.
For now, Kenyans are left to speculate, but one thing is clear—David Maraga is not done shaping the national conversation just yet.
